The following statement is from Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening following yesterday’s vote by the U.S. House of Representatives approving the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA):

“The approval of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) by the U.S. House of Representatives is a victory for Texas agriculture when farmers and ranchers need it most.

“USMCA builds on the success of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The new agreement leads to even stronger partnerships with our country’s nearest neighbors. Trade is vital to the livelihood of American farmers, consumers and the U.S. food industry.

“USMCA provides new market access for dairy and poultry products in Canada, and it maintains the zero-tariff platform on all other agricultural products to Canada and on all agricultural products to Mexico. This is the first free trade agreement for the U.S. that addresses cooperation, information sharing and other trade rules related to biotechnology and gene editing. There are also provisions that enhance science-based trading standards among the three nations as the basis for sanitary and phytosanitary measures for agricultural products.

“Current agricultural exports from Texas to our North American partners amount to about $7.2 billion and stands to increase under USMCA by $2.2 billion.

“We thank the members of the entire U.S. House delegation from Texas for supporting the USMCA measure. We look forward to working with U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz in anticipation of the Senate’s expected consideration of the agreement in January.

“The finish line of this historic agreement is in sight. Texas farm and ranch families are excited about the completion of this critical effort that has been several years in the making.”
