Councilwoman Maria Tu stays a few words after being sworn onto the Plano City Council Monday night.

Maria Tu made history Monday night as the first Asian woman to serve on the Plano City Council in the city’s 146-year history. Tu, a Taiwan-born naturalized American citizen, was officially sworn in as Place 1 council member, poetically replacing Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Angela Miner – a fellow immigrant – who stepped down after 20 years in public service.

The significance of Tu’s achievement wasn’t lost on her, nor the rows of family and friends, some who voted for the first time and visited the Plano City Council chambers just for Tu. Her seat on the council represents how Plano is changing, something she takes pride in.
