Delivered on Saturday, the scanner is one of four to be ordered as part of the country’s efforts to combat covid-19.

According to the health ministry, thoracic scanning is for patients with severe respiratory disorders such as covid-19 that can cause rapidly fatal bilateral pneumonia if not promptly managed in intensive care.

The ministry writes on its dedicated coronavirus platform:

"Screening by scanner can confirm the presence of the virus in just a few minutes because covid-19 causes different radiological signs than other seasonal pneumopathies."

After some initial tests, the medical device was expected to be operational early this week.

At the time of writing, covid-19 had claimed 44 lives in Luxembourg. Since the start of the outbreak, 25,702 people have been tested for coronavirus, of which 2,970 had been confirmed.

The Robert Schuman Hospitals group operates the Bohler Clinic in Kirchberg, Kirchberg Hospital, Sainte-Marie Clinic in Esch-Alzette and Zithaklinik in the Gare district.
