Summer Programs 2020 for 5th - 8th graders

Jobs/Internships

CitySprouts Summer Program: A 5 week project-based STEM program for 11-14 year olds. Program will be run remotely this year. It is no cost to families. Participants will receive a $100 stipend once completed. Applications accepted until June 12th, window to apply is now closed (as of 6/16), City Sprouts will be in touch soon with those who applied to participate.

Work Force Summer Learning and Literacy Program: six-week summer program for rising 8th grade (current 7th grade) The goal: empower students to become active owners of and advocates in their own education.  Involves youth-initiated research, group projects, peer to peer learning, guest speakers, and field trips. Students receive  up to a $200 Stipend for full participation in the program. Find the application here: https://www.tfaforms.com/4813892 For current 7th graders only. Junior Leaders in Communities (JLinC) at Summer Urban Programs: Program bringing together rising 9th graders from Boston and Cambridge through the Phillips Brooks House Association’s (PBHA) Summer Urban Program (SUP), a network of 11 summer camps that serve Boston and Cambridge Area youth and families. Rising 9th graders gain valuable work experience in camp classrooms and groups (virtual this year), build positive social connections, and cultivate a safe and inclusive environment that promotes social justice through youth leadership. Stipend of $350 paid to Junior Leaders and opportunity to be a Junior Counselor next year.

Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program: Virtual job training program for Cambridge residents, must be 14yrs old by July 6th. Apply here and make sure to have required documents. Not all applicants guaranteed a job; priority given to those eligible for free/reduced lunch.

Innovators for Purpose: Running virtual program called Creative Doers Studio, apply through Mayor’s Program for 14yr old+, also hosting ifP Teens Pathways and Passions Talks

Rise Up: transition to high school program,  paid through Mayor’s Program, talk to school for referral to program. For current 8th graders only.

Upward Bound : College prep program for rising 9th graders going to CRLS, Prospect Hill and Community Charter School of Cambridge in September. There will be no residential element this year. Families should complete the Student Pre-Application to determine their  eligibility to continue on to the full application process. Participants paid through the Mayor’s Program.  For current 8th graders only. Enrollment update 6/16: still taking applications but not for much longer.

No and Low Cost Programs

Free Online/Offline Summer 2020 (Cambridge Department of Human Service Programs): Free programming for K-8th graders to engage with 1 hour of virtual small group sessions daily as well as access to a weekly schedule of virtual and in-person activities, including outdoor physical activity. Programming is age based (K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and teens) and for Cambridge residents. Registration link available on this webpage beginning Monday, June 22nd.

Camp Fiction: A six-week virtual writing course for kids and teens ages 10-15 from a 2020 CRLS graduate, published writer and poet. Young writers will have the goal of completing the summer with fully-developed short stories. Twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursdays for $10/class between July 7th – August 13th

Science Club for Girls Virtual Rocketry Program: Free for girlx in 5-8th grade. Participants will be making model rockets, talking about women astronauts and aerospace engineering and launching the rockets in small groups.  SCFG will drop off a box of materials before the program. Program will take place over Zoom  July 6-July 17, 1:30pm - 3:30pm Mondays-Fridays. Parkour Generations Boston: Online calendar of kids and adults classes, with daily community strength training, suggested $10 for drop-ins, free plus benefits for members. Adventure training weeks at Brooklyn Boulders (in-person) in July and August (see in-person section below)

CPS Virtual Summer Math and Summer ELA Programs: Four-week half day virtual programming in Math or Summer Reading/Creative Writing run by Cambridge Public SChools for rising 6th-8th graders. No cost. Register at http://bit.ly/mathcps or http://bit.ly/elacps

Summer Reading 2020:  Read, explore, and learn with the Cambridge Public Library this summer!  Choose the activities you want to try and collect as many badges as you can throughout the summer. In addition, there are virtual programs and events for kids and families almost every day.  All ages and abilities welcome. Registration begins Monday, June 22

East End House Middle School Program: currently running afterschool programming online and planning for virtual program with the possibility of some in-person, open air hangouts later this summer. Also operating an Exempt Emergency Child Care Program for children of essential workers, ages 15mo-13years old.

Tutoring Plus Virtual Summer Program: Offering practical applications of math, creative writing, science experiments, discussions about current events and more. For Ages 9-14.

Full STEAM Ahead into Summer: 3 week virtual camp led by MIT students for students entering 7th-9th grade. Two sessions starting July 6th, register at FullSTEAM.mit.edu/summercamp.  Enrollment update 6/16: registration now closed.

Brooklyn Boulders: Virtual kids and teen academy (11-16yr olds) classes to work on fitness, strength and mobility, no charge. Also running in person programs (see below)

Cambridge Youth Enrichment Program (CYEP) camp offering academic enrichment in Cambridge. Camp will run from Monday July 6th-Friday, August 7th. CYEP will offer 2-3 hours per day of online workshops and one on one mentoring and tutoring.  Staff will provide families with activities that they can do at home.  Camps will also send home a summer activity kit with materials for art, STEM, and physical movement. The Dance Complex: Central Sq studio posts free online classes, discussions and performances on their blog, IG live and facebook live

Kesher Virtual Camp: 4 weeks of hour long programs for incoming K-8th grade in a variety of activities: art, puppetry, cooking, yoga and more. Classes are small and integrate Hebrew language learning at all levels, $80 for four weeks.

Community Arts Center: currently running virtual after-school, will provide virtual programming for summer. More details coming soon.

Cambridge Adventure Summer Connections: Programming for our older campers from CADC and their friends, including virtual field trips, group discussions, fun activities, and time to connect with each other.

Mission Control - Build a Martian Colony: Artisan’s Asylum’s two-week immersive virtual program for teens (12-16) that teaches participants the fundamentals of electronics, engineering, robotics and 3D modeling. Campers create the foundation for the first Martian colony, 5 days/week from 10AM-12PM and 1PM-3PM daily. Mission 1 = July 20th – July 31st, Mission 2 = August 10th – August 31st. Sliding scale fee. Registration closes one week prior to mission launch!

Camps/Programs for a fee

Summer Ink day camps to transform the writing skills of students in 5th through 8th grade through adventure, sports, and arts activities. 1- week sessions beginning July 6-July 31st. The Cambridge Math Circle: Offering online opportunities in the mornings for 2nd-7th graders to do logic puzzles, learn problem solving techniques, board games, and more for $150, with need based financial aid. Mon-Wed-Fri Class  spots still available for middle schoolers (as of 6/16). Application here.

Beyond the 4th Wall: Offering  3 weeks of camp for 7-11 year olds July 6-10, July 20-24 and Aug 3-7. Classes in acting, broadway dance, play writing, improv, puppetry, yoga, set design and more.  

Summer @ BB&N Virtual Camp: Classic Camp (full or half day, $300/$17) happening every week starting June 22nd for pre-K through 7th graders. Specialty camps (half day, $300) for older kids also available in chess, soccer skills, animation, mastermind adventures and more. Scholarships may still be available for CPS students, email aleavitt@cpsd.us.

Boston Mobile Dance Studio: Virtual dance classes (every day, classes change, usually $15 fee to join) and a virtual dance party Saturday nights. Check BMDS facebook page for up to date info.

Empow STEM Camps: One week virtual sessions on tech and design, robotics, coding and video game design offered all summer, half day $299/wk, full day $499/week with sliding scale financial aid available

Club Z Tutoring: 1:1 tutoring for ages 8-18 in Study Skills (“Learning Built to Last”), SAT/ACT Prep, Math, English/Language Arts and Singapore Math.

Summer Arts at Fayerweather: two week sessions for 200/each, campers choose four daily classes from a long list of their multi-arts curriculum offerings for K-5 and 6-8th graders.

Business of Doing Good: multi-week online sessions for $150/175 in Social Entrepreneurship, Communication or  Creating Your Personal Brand

Xplore Chinese: for those learning Chinese, language institutes for ages 12-18, one week half day program for $399, scholarships and one free week for CPS students available

iD Tech Virtual Courses:Weeklong courses for all age groups in Scratch, Minecraft, Roblox, Coding for Video Games, YouTube storytelling, and Machine Learning, $399

Digital Media Academy: Courses for each age group in tech skills like App Design, Scratch Coding, 3D Modeling and Mobile Journalism. $399 for each course, which entails about 15 hours of lessons.

Mass Art Summer Intensives: Two-week online summer intensives (half or full day) in graphic design, digital photography, animation, drawing and more. $774 for half day, $1528 for full day, unclear if scholarships still available

In PERSON Programming: 

Club Daybreak, Summer 2020: Opportunities for Daybreak Campers to connect with peers and staff in person and Camp without Walls (including virtual experiences) while engaging in exciting activities

Parkour and Climbing Adventure Weeks: four sessions of one-week camps in August at Brooklyn Boulders in Somerville that combine Parkour and climbing into a full day for ages 6-13. CIT possibility for 13+, can pay by day or by week with generous scholarships available through Parkour Generations.

Olympia Fencing Summer Camp: - Our fencing summer camp for beginners makes learning fencing fun and enjoyable, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, for kids ages 8-12 of all athletic levels and body types. Camp runs July 6-10 from 9:00am — 3:00pm for $100/day (minimum of 3-day signup required).

Summer Learn to Row: running a Learn to Scull program and a Summer Skills program, 2 hours/day for 2 weeks

Summer Stage at Central Square Theater: five different one week camps focused on performance (Journey Around the World, Acting Funny,  Creating Characters, Brave the Bard and Modern Mythmaking) for $375 each week

Tomorrow’s Stars Sports Camps: Cambridge Baseball camp moved from the week of June 29th to the week of July 27th, Cambridge Soccer camp remains the week of July 20th

Kroka Expeditions: Overnight wilderness adventure programs throughout the summer, all programs running with reduced capacity and lots of regulations in place

Empow STEM Camp at Cambridge Montessori: one week sessions throughout August of in-person camp with safety procedures, full day ($665) or half day ($385) in tech and design, robotics, coding and video game design. Can shift to virtual format as well (doing both), sliding scale financial aid available

Parts and Crafts:  running spring programming online but unclear if summer will be in the same format as usual, with two week themed sessions all summer. Registration is by one week slots (ex. Girls Invention Week, Music and Mechanisms, Imaginary Worlds and more). Participants usually register in one week sessions 6/22-8/24. Cost: $375 sliding scale
