Major Updates on Public Gatherings In Wake of COVID-19 Pandemic

New orders issued to reduce the spread of COVID-19

This morning, Governor Inslee and Seattle-King County Department of Public Health announced new measures to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The Governor’s Emergency Proclamation prohibits events with 250 or more people in King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties. In King County, our Health Officer, Dr. Jeff Duchin, is issuing a parallel Local Health Officer Order to prohibit gatherings of 250 people or more. In addition, the local order is prohibiting events of less than 250 people, unless measures are taken by event organizers to minimize risk. You can find additional details about the Health Officer Order here and watch the entirety of the press conference here.

Further guidance for schools was also issued today. Since the new health order, multiple school districts have announced that they will be closing for significant periods of time. If you have school-aged children, I urge you to start planning for possible closures.

We know that these new restrictions will disrupt people’s lives and that this is a scary time for our region. However, it is critical that we all heed these measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to protect those at risk for severe illness, including people over the age of 60, people with underlying health conditions, and pregnant people. To protect our community, we need to act as a community and do everything we can to protect our vulnerable loved ones and neighbors.

I will continue to share updates with you as I receive them. In the meantime, please continue to follow public health guidelines and check here for the latest from public health officials.

Until next time,

Note: COVID 19 DOES NOT discriminate based on race, ethnicity, nationality, language, nor economic situation. Misinformation about the COVID 19 has created fear and hostility that is impacting many of our communities experiencing inequities, particularly our Chinese and other Asian (and Pacific Islander) communities and unsheltered neighbors. Let us remember that we are stronger together. King County strives to be a welcoming community for all and condemns the unfounded fear and hostility aimed toward our Chinese and other Asian communities and unsheltered communities.
