TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Kansas is getting a vaccine finder tool, will find out if a new coronavirus variant is in the state tomorrow and receive a bump in vaccines received, according to to Gov. Laura Kelly and Dr. Lee Norman at a Wednesday afternoon coronavirus briefing at the Kansas Statehouse.

Kelly began the conference at 4 p.m., and gave an update regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

A poster at the meeting showed how vaccines are making their way into Kansas communities.

Kelly said the state is expecting a 16% increase in the number of vaccines received from the federal government. Kansas is set to receive 17,550 Pfizer and some 23,000 Moderna vaccines in the near future.

The federal government will also start telling states three weeks in advance how many shots will be arriving.

“Since we began receiving vaccine shipments in December, we’ve been notified on a week by week basis which basically created a weekly logistical fire drill,” Kelly said. “Having the additional time to plan will provide clarity and improve communication with local public health departments and providers.”

The state is also developing a vaccine finder tool to let Kansans find the nearest vaccination site to them. The state’s vaccine website also will list county-specific allocations of vaccines in the near future. Kelly said she will have an update on the tool and allocations at next week’s briefing.

Dr. Lee Norman said his department is also waiting to get genome sequencing results from a Winfield prison outbreak. It expects the results tomorrow, which will show if a new coronavirus variant is spreading in that part of the state.
