EM 2022 Mission Priorities Scorecard

EM achieved the majority of its priorities for calendar year (CY) 2022, completing challenging work that demonstrates visible and effectual progress as the program focuses on some of its most difficult remaining challenges.

The CY 2022 Mission and Priorities Scorecard shows EM again hit its mark by finishing notable construction milestones, executing key cleanup projects, reducing the EM footprint, awarding major contracts that accelerate progress, and driving innovation, sustainability and improved performance.

“Our scorecard reflects that we delivered on the majority of our cleanup priorities for another year, finishing important work that protects the environment and communities, and enables a concerted focus on safely completing the EM mission sooner and more efficiently,” EM Senior Advisor William “Ike” White said. “We finished strong thanks to the dedicated work of our employees and support from our cleanup partners. It shows what we can accomplish when we have strong alignment between our organizations on effective and achievable goals.”

Transuranic waste shipments at Los Alamos National Laboratory are staged for transportation to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) for permanent disposal.

Transuranic waste shipments at Los Alamos National Laboratory are staged for transportation to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) for permanent disposal. EM and National Nuclear Security Administration contractor Triad commingle shipments to maximize efficiency and reduce the number of trucks on the roads to WIPP. EM exceeded its 2022 priority to ship transuranic waste from the EM Los Alamos Field Office to WIPP.

EM achieved or exceeded several key priorities in CY 2022, including:

  • Exceeding the number of shipments of transuranic waste from the EM Los Alamos Field Office to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.
  • Completing demolition of the X-326 uranium process building, marking the most significant cleanup milestone to date at the Portsmouth Site. The two-story structure covered 56 acres under roof.
  • Issuing the first-ever EM Program Plan outlining a decision roadmap the cleanup program will use as a guide over the next two decades. The plan completes a trio of outward facing planning documents, joining EM's CY priorities list and its 10-year Strategic Vision.
  • Beginning demolition of the Main Plant Process Building, a project that further reduces environmental risks at one of the West Valley Demonstration Project’s last remaining major facilities.
  • Removing 1 million pounds of an ozone-depleting chemical from the Paducah Site ahead of schedule, a benefit to the environment comparable to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by taking about 10,000 vehicles off the road in a year.
  • Transferring the former Biology Complex at the Y-12 National Security Complex at Oak Ridge back to the National Nuclear Security Administration. EM created 18 acres of clean, reusable land for Y-12 to build its new Lithium Processing Facility.
  • Updating climate vulnerability assessments for all EM sites.
  • Completing all Subsurface Disposal Area buried waste remediation at the Idaho National Laboratory Site.
