Best 'safe to serve' terraces

We may be experiencing some much-needed rainfall, but sunny days are set to make a comeback soon, providing the ideal weather for an aperitif or lazy lunch on a restaurant or bar terrace.

So which "safe to serve" bars and restaurants have the nicest spots to soak up the sun and do a bit of people watching?

Elch Club Restaurant – Bertrange

Check out the palm-tree lined and shaded deck areas, or spread your toes out in some sand in the new beach area of this bar restaurant, open for lunch and dinner or just a drink. Offering salads, burgers, roasted cod and cheese plates, this quiet location is just the ticket for a staycation. You can check out the weekly menu and take a look at the terrace here.

Tempo Bar où Manger – Kirchberg

The Place de l'Europe location (in case you fancy a bit of culture at the MUDAM contemporary art gallery), is a great space for people watching. Glass tables, parasols and yellow chairs give it a modern feel that blends in with its surroundings, which include the architectural icon of the Philharmonie building. Beim Renert – Luxembourg City

Another great location at Place Guillaume II, you can sip on a Campari and soda and tuck into a plate of traditional cuisine (this is the place to try Bouneschlupp when it is on the menu). You can take a look at the weekly menu here.

Brasserie Schuman – Limpertsberg

If you need a little elegance and the chance to dress up a bit, then head to this brasserie next to the Grand Théâtre, for that stately garden feel, complete with palm trees in giant head-shaped pots, and white and cream furnishings. If you still have the receipt from a takeaway or delivery you ordered from them during lockdown, you can get a 10% reduction on your meal. You can find out more here.

Pavillon@ Merl or Mamer Park

With the flowers in bloom, there's nothing quite like a bit of park life to make you feel that summer is truly here. The Pavilion in Merl Park and the terrace cafe in Mamer are both open. The Pavillon de Parc Merl offers passion fruit mojitos and picnic lunches at its takeaway counter if you prefer to bring a blanket and soak up some rays on the grass. The Pavillon Am Brill and Café Kleng Gemeng both offer menus and tables in the park (the ones opposite the town hall are so spaced apart that you will feel like you're in a private garden).

Boos beach club – Bridel

For that pool-side feel, Boos is open Wednesday to Saturday evening from 17.00 and Sunday all day (with a non-stop food service from 11.00 to 22.00), when they offer their famous 1001 Nights Sunday dinner. Palm trees and shady tables beckon you for an aperitif after a walk in Bambesch, or you can tuck into scampi or duck amongst other plates offered on the weekly menu. Osteria di Niederanvan

A lovely terrace strewn with fairy lights at night, but shady during the day, with tables very purposefully set far apart. Tuck into tasty Italian fare including fresh pasta, risotto and salads. You can find out how to reserve a table, and take a look at the full menu here.

Hostellerie du Grünewald – Dommeldange

Open weekday evenings, and for lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday, this welcoming terracotta terrace is light and airy, but if you prefer, they also have a more intimate glasshouse. Choose from a selection of tapas or a set menu including Iberian ham and fish soup, or go all out for some lobster. You can reserve and find out what's on the menu, here.
