TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to climb onto and operate assigned equipment and to engage and disengage attachments. Must be able to handle various hand tools. Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, traversing uneven ground, and lifting materials and supplies weighing approx. 50 lbs.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in an outdoor environment and often exposed to various weather conditions, odors, and dust. Must be available to work weekends.


High school diploma/equivalent and four (4) years' experience in grounds maintenance, including specific experience operating a bobcat, tractor, chainsaw, and riding mower with one (1) of the four (4) years in a lead capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must have a valid Class "B" Commercial driver's license as a condition of continued employment. Must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. Must successfully complete job-related skills testing as designated by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in operating heavy equipment, such as a front-end loader, back-hoe loader, track-hoe, excavator, motor grader skid steer (bob cat), crane, and bulldozer (crawler tractor).


The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
