OAKLAND, CA — The Port of Oakland Board of Commissioners on Thursday selected long-time local public figure Danny Wan as its new executive director. At a special meeting that capped a two-month, nationwide search, the board selected Wan to replace Chris Lytle, who retired in July after six years at the helm.

"We're fortunate to have Danny as the port's new chief executive - not only is he an experienced public professional, he is also a local leader with demonstrated commitment to the communities the port serves," Board President Ces Butner said in a news release.

Wan served as the interim executive director prior to his appointment and was the port attorney for six years prior to that, according to port officials.

In 2000, Wan was elected as the first openly gay member of the Oakland City Council, representing Chinatown and Lake Merritt, and from 1996 to 2000 he represented Oakland, San Leandro and Alameda on the East Bay Municipal Utility District board.

"I look forward to working with the board and an excellent port staff to plan for even greater efficiency in moving people and goods and to grow benefits for the state and the communities that surround the port," Wan said.
