BOARD OF HEALTH STAFF REPORT (SR 19-027)
April 9, 2019
Consent Agenda

Authorize the Administrator to approve recruitment of 1.0 FTE Disease Intervention Specialist to fill a budgeted, vacant position (SR 19-027; N. Furness)

Division:
Prevention Services / Nancy Furness, Division Director
Prior Board Review:
Executive Committee, 3/27/19

Background

Per Board of Health instruction, any recruitment for vacant staff positions must be approved by the Board during the 2019 budget year.

The Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) in the Tuberculosis Control program resigned her position on March 7, 2019. This position investigates individuals exposed to confirmed and potential cases of tuberculosis, provides testing for identified TB contacts, and refers clients to community providers for medical care (Exhibit A).

Based on the historically fluctuating workload in Tuberculosis Control and the consistently high workload for the investigators in STD/HIV, this position will be revised to also perform disease investigations in the STD Control program to maximize staff capabilities and address program needs.

The position is currently budgeted for $97,761 salary/benefits. It’s anticipated that a new hire will result in an initial annual cost of $84,000 - $90,000 based on experience, a reduction of approximately $7,300 - $13,000. Recruitment will begin once final Board approval is given.

Board Authority

Consistent with the Division of Responsibilities, the Board of Health has authority over the Health District budget.

Recommended Motion

MOVE TO authorize the Administrator to approve recruitment of a 1.0 Disease Intervention Specialist position to fill a budgeted, vacant position.
