Primary P1 and P5 are set to return to school on 26 May - but it is "not yet foreseen" that nursery, secondary, and remaining primary cycles will return before the end of the school year.

This according to a statement published on the website of the Luxembourg II school in Bertrange, dated 12 May 2020.

The statement emphasises that the decision on partial reopening was reached through discussions between the two European schools in Luxembourg, feedback from the advisory boards, and consultation with the secretary general of the European schools.

The partial reopening will be paired with the implementation of a series of safety precautions, which include additional hygiene measures, splitting of classes into two groups who attend on alternate weeks, and compulsory masks at all times when entering/leaving/circulating the school buildings. There will be no canteen service, and no sports or swimming lessons. Pupils also have to stay in their base groups, and a 2-metre distance must be maintained in classes when not wearing masks.

Who is to return, and who is not (yet)

The document states that "Primary P1 and P5" will return starting on 26 May. There will be no classes on 25 May, which is set aside for staff preparations.

As regards other cycles, the document states:

"It is not yet foreseen that Nursery cycle classes, all remaining Primary cycle levels as well as Secondary cycle will return to “in situ” lessons before the end of this school year 2019/2020, anyway distance teaching and learning will be continued for these levels and classes until 03 July 2020. We will continuously monitor and assess the evolution of the situation."

The schools will also assess whether an additional primary cycle may return as of 9 June, and the decision on this will be communicated in the week of 1 June.
