Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 9, 2019 06:40 PM
From: Senator Vincent J. Hughes
To: All Senate members
Subject: Repeal of the Attorney General's Act 58 concurrent jurisdiction

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation to repeal the recently granted concurrent jurisdiction given to the Attorney General in certain firearms cases in Philadelphia.

Act 58, which was signed into law last week, in addition to fixing an important issue relating to municipal police cooperation, it contained provisions that granted concurrent jurisdiction to the Attorney General in certain firearm crimes.

Since it became law, it has become clear that neither the Attorney General nor the District Attorney sought this legislative change.

Most important and troublesome is that this change could upend the great work that both the Attorney General and District Attorney have done with the Gun Violence Task Force in Philadelphia.

I ask that you join me in repealing these provisions of Act 58. Please contact my office if you have any questions.
