Job Description


Completing and overseeing a variety of assignments in specialized areas of traffic engineering involving traffic signals.  This position is the technical expert for the operation of all electronic traffic control devices within a geographic area of the state, and will train less experienced employees in the following duties:
- Train and guide employees in the work unit in the professional and technical aspects of the assigned work.  Assist in evaluating and specify equipment to implement new technologies in signal operations.  Prepare and oversee preparation of survey requests, technical engineering studies, and system analysis for new and revised electronic traffic control devices.
- Oversee the preparation and implementation of results of computer analysis programs necessary for designing improved traffic signal system coordination and optimization.  Prepare and coordinate engineering reports and studies for implementation of signal system optimization projects.  Train employees in the use of computer analysis programs and serve as lead support in the process of updating coordinated signal systems.
- Provide oversight, training, and assistance to journey level engineers for complex projects.  Review base, preliminary, and Omissions and Errors Check (OEC) plans prepared by the department or consultants for operational correctness and concerns.  Determine scope of signal work for projects.

Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.

Transportation Engineer 12
Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11.

Alternate Education and Experience

Transportation Engineer 9 - 12
Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.

Vacation and Sick Leave: Eligible full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 personal days and 13 sick days per year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions. 
 
Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.
