International Student
Your Potential Has No Bounds
Per Title 10 of the United States Code, the maximum number of international students at the United States Air Force Academy at any one time is 60. Therefore, we admit approximately 15 international students each year. International applicants must meet the same admission requirements as all other applicants but should be aware of some differences in the application process.
International students cannot apply directly to the Air Force Academy. They must apply through their government, usually their ministry of defense. Only a select number of countries can nominate students. The home country may also require a commitment to serve in the home country’s military. Students should check with their home country’s government for more information on the country’s eligibility to nominate and the country’s nomination procedures.
The Application Process
Obtaining a Nomination
In order to be considered for admission to the U.S. Air Force Academy, you must be nominated by your country. Nominations from your government are processed through the United States Defense Attaché Office/American embassy serving your country and must be received by the Academy by December 14 for the class entering the following June.
To apply for a nomination, write to your country’s government. Your letter should include complete details about your background and your potential for success at the Academy and should be received at least one year prior to the date of admission. The Defense Attaché Office at the American embassy can direct you to the correct ministry in your country. DO NOT apply directly to the U.S. Air Force Academy or other United States government officials.
Once your nomination has been received, U.S. Air Force Academy Admissions will send a letter to the Defense Attaché Office at the American embassy with detailed instructions for you to complete your application. The Defense Attaché Office will help you complete all required forms as soon as possible and then send them to the Academy on your behalf.
Eligibility Requirements
The eligibility requirements for international students differ from those of other applicants. Each international candidate must:
- Be nominated by their home country’s government.
- Be unmarried.
International students cannot be married or have dependents. They must also be a citizen of the nominating country, be of good moral character and demonstrate strong leadership potential and academic performance, as well as meet physical and medical standards. - Be at least 17 years of age or older but not past your 23rd birthday on July 1 of the year of entry.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) reasoning test is required for admission. Admissions will only accept the SAT reasoning test, not the SAT subject tests.

Appointments
All required documents must be received by U.S. Air Force Academy Admissions by March 15 of the year of entry, however, your Defense Attaché Office may have an earlier deadline. Appointments to the Academy are awarded on a competitive basis and are made in April of each year.
