American Airlines expanding again at DFW Airport with two new gates

The carrier already has 900 flights a day out of North Texas.

American Airlines plans to expand again at DFW International Airport with two new gates to bulk up its capacity next year.

American Airlines has asked the airport to approve a plan to add the new gates in Terminal E, including passenger jet bridges. The deal would cost the airport $8.9 million and be paid back by the airline through gate rental fees.

“These will be regional gates used to support our summer 2020 schedule,” said American Airlines spokeswoman Annie Lorenzana.

American Airlines has agreed to a deal to build a new $3 billion terminal at DFW International Airport, which is preliminarily set to open in 2025 with 24 new gates. There are also plans to update Terminal C. While agreed to in principle, DFW’s board still has to approve construction of the new terminal.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines has put DFW at the center of its domestic and international expansion plans, adding new flights and routes to places such as Israel and New Zealand. Earlier this year, it hit its goal to operate 900 daily flights out of DFW.

The new gates will be used for shorter regional flights.

Terminal E is one of the original DFW Airport buildings, opened in 1974. It has 41 total gates and houses many of the regional carrier flights for American’s partners such as Envoy and SkyWest. The terminal’s renovation was finished in 2017. Terminal E was also the site of a satellite expansion finished this year that added 15 gates.

The airport board is to vote on the gate expansion Thursday.
