Description

Hennepin County Public Health is seeking up to three student interns to help conduct the 2020 HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Needs Assessment that will survey 700 Minnesotans living with HIV. The results of this needs assessment will inform Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program funding decisions, END HIV MN (the state strategy to end the HIV Epidemic), Positively Hennepin (the Hennepin County strategy to end the HIV epidemic), and the ongoing work to reduce HIV-related health disparities in Minnesota.

Location and hours:
This position is located at the Health Services Building, 525 Portland Avenue S., Minneapolis 55415. It will require up to 20 hours per week, with an anticipated start of March 2020 and ending in August 2020. Applicants will need to have the ability to travel throughout the metro area and throughout the state of Minnesota as needed. (All travel costs incurred are reimbursed by Hennepin County.)


In this internship, you will  be overseen by the Public Health Assessment Team and Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. This position will work collaboratively with public health professionals working in HIV service delivery, community engagement, and data collection and analysis. The student intern will:
  • Learn to administer a community needs assessment through a survey.
  • Conduct on-site survey collection, which includes:
    • Work with Ryan White service providers and other organizations to schedule on-site survey collection.
    • Approach persons at the location to ask and encourage them to complete the needs assessment.
    • Provide assistance to persons completing the needs assessment.
    • Follow the procedures for the proper care and management of the completed needs assessment surveys.
  • Provide periodic updates on survey collection to the Minnesota Council for HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention, the community body sponsoring this needs assessment.

Need to have:
  • Current enrollment as a 4th year undergraduate student or a graduate student, pursuing a degree in Public Health, Public Policy, Epidemiology, Community Health, Statistics, Biostatistics, or other related degree.
  • Ability to travel, as needed, throughout the metro area and throughout the state of Minnesota. (All travel costs incurred are reimbursed by Hennepin County.)
 
Nice to have:  
  • Strong interest to work with the HIV community.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish in addition to English verbally and in writing.
 
About the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program 
Hennepin County Public Health (HCPH) and the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) collaborate to administer their respective federal grants through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. This program provides medical care, essential support services, and medications to people with HIV. As part of the federal grants, both HCPH and DHS collaborate with the Minnesota Council for HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment of Minnesotans living with HIV. The Minnesota Council for HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention is comprised of community members living with HIV who receive Ryan White services, HIV service providers, and other stakeholders that are working towards ending the HIV epidemic in Minnesota and empowering all Minnesotans living with HIV to achieve their best health.
