This position is a senior leader in the Communicable Disease Epidemiology & Immunization Section that develops, implements, oversees, and evaluates public health activities and responses to communicable diseases and provides direct supervision to technical experts within the section. It oversees implementation of guidance and strategies defined by the Section Chief/Health Officer regarding communicable disease issues and programs and work closely with other divisions within Public Health including Emergency Preparedness, Community Health, Environmental Health, Communications and Compliance. 

The position reports to the Prevention Divison Director and works primarily but not exclusively remotely Monday through Friday 8:00 - 5:00, after hours as needs arise and on-call after hours.

Job Duties

In collaboration with the Section Deputy Chief and/or Chief/Health Officer

  • Oversight and management of surveillance, investigation and related epidemiological work for team of medical epidemiologists on communicable disease case and outbreak investigation, prevention, and control activities related to COVID-19 and other infectious diseases of public health significance.  
  • Oversight and technical support for analytics and informatics managers working on communicable disease surveillance activities, analyses, epidemiology reports and dashboards, and database development and integration, related to COVID-19 and other infectious diseases of public health significance. 
 
  • Notify and routinely keep informed the Section Chief/Health Officer and Deputy Chief of issues, outbreaks or investigations that might warrant higher level interventions or attract media attention as well as important epidemiological findings and programmatic developments. 
 
  • Direct supervision of three medical epidemiologists and two epidemiology managers.
 
  • Contribute to Section policy development and implementation; organization, staffing decisions, resource requests, hiring processes; and staff training, incorporating an equity lens in all decision making. 
 
  • Represent the Section at internal and external meetings and other forums as requested, including presenting communicable disease and epidemiology information to scientific/clinical, public, or media audiences.
 
  • Serve as acting Section Deputy Chief during Deputy Chief absences.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and an in-depth, progressively responsible background in public health or any combination of education or experience that clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the job duties of the position.
 
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate principles of equity and social justice into program development and implementation and the day-to-day operation of the Section. Experience with program management and supervision


Desired Qualifications:
  • Clinical healthcare background 
  • CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Fellowship completion
