Department Overview
The City of Seattle is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Telecommunications Systems Installer with Seattle Information Technology (IT).

Job Responsibilities

This position has responsibility for the configuration/programming, installation, testing and maintenance of City of Seattle-owned radio, mobile computing, mobile video or other technology systems equipment in City of Seattle vehicles including fire apparatus, police vehicles, motorcycles, police boats, fire boats, parking enforcement vehicles, heavy equipment, and utility vehicles. Telecommunications installers also assist with the installation of fixed infrastructure equipment and systems, generally working with Radio Technicians or the Communication Shop Supervisor. This role also supports outside agencies that contract with City of Seattle for these same services. Installer staff work under the general supervision of the Lead Installer and Communication Shop Supervisor.
 
Guidelines for the Senior Installer work exist in the form of work order requests, schematics, wiring diagrams or technical manuals, and training provided by the Lead Installer. The Senior Installer interact with in-house staff, as well as employees of other departments or outside agencies, so as to facilitate the configuration, installation, and basic repair of this equipment. 
 
Employee in this position will perform the following responsibilities:

  •  Configure, install, maintain, test and provide first level repair of equipment installed in city vehicles and facilities. Installed equipment may include various types of radios, telephones, computing devices, video systems or other telecommunications equipment and support systems. This work includes the installation of and first line repair of microphones, video camera, radio system components, computers, antenna systems, sirens, and lighting systems.
  • Support technicians in the configuration, installation, maintenance and test of fixed infrastructure equipment and systems.
  • Conduct operational tests and adjust equipment to meet system specifications; resolve minor technical problems by performing equipment-specific diagnostic routines and repairs.
  • Assist in the introduction of newly installed radio, telephone, mobile computing, mobile video or other telecommunications systems equipment to user departments, including demonstrations of proper equipment usage.
  • Perform required first level maintenance of assigned system equipment.
  • Respond to emergency service calls and implement all equipment changes, removals and relocations, as directed.
  • Maintain accurate equipment assignment records.
  • Performs telecom installation duties commensurate with classification level as required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

NOTE:  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered for the required qualifications.

  •  Completion of basic vocational training in computing technology, electronics, telephony, data communications, radio technology or related field, plus three (3) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, testing or providing instruction in the use of radio or other related telecommunications equipment or technology systems. Two (2) additional years of work experience may be substituted for vocational training.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers' License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Ability to safely lift and move 50 lbs is required. The position also requires movement inside of cramped spaces in vehicles, including working above the head or in areas where visibility is limited.
NOTE:  Employment contingent upon successful completion of comprehensive background investigation in compliance with Seattle's Fair Change Employment Ordinance SMC 14.17. A CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Systems) level background check is also required.
 
NOTE:  Pre-placement physical required.
 
Desired Qualifications:
  •  Four (4) years experience in the installation, maintenance, testing or providing instruction in the use of radio or other related telecommunications equipment or technology systems.
  • Working knowledge of electronics, radio equipment, basic radio test instruments, and computing devices in order to install and maintain such equipment.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in diagnosing and resolving installation challenges, technical problems and the ability to address multiple issues simultaneously.
  • Ability to work as a productive team member; share knowledge, and document work in a collaborative effort to resolve problems and optimize the network is essential.
  • Strong customer service skills, and a demonstrated ability to work with both internal and external customers at all levels in a professional and supportive manner.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing vehicular technology. 
  • Self-starter, including the ability to locate information and learn on own.
  • Ability to represent the Comm Shop/City in meetings with internal customers, and the ability to communicate with peer installers and technicians, and guide staff and vendors who may be less technically experienced.
  • A demonstrated history of reliability and availability to support customer needs.
Special Conditions:
  • Ability to alter work schedule to accommodate peak work demands; shift schedule changes and overtime may be required
  • Requires servicing City customers at various locations within and outside of the City of Seattle, including remote watershed locations or radio facilities.Ability to work non-business hours.
  • Ability to work On-call.
