KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The site of the old Woodlands Racetrack in Kansas City, Kansas, will soon be home to one of two new Amazon fulfillment centers, Gov. Laura Kelly announced Friday.
In addition to the Woodlands location, Kelly announced another location will open at 7130 N. Broadway Ave. in Park City, Kansas, which is north of Wichita, Kansas.
The centers will provide some well-needed economic relief as Wichita has dealt with losses due to the pandemic and the suspension of production for the Boeing 737 Max.
"So as our community has been especially hit hard with the grounding of the max and also with the COVID pandemic, even in the midst of this economic turmoil we have benefited from an incredible economic development team," Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple said. "This announcement is a testament to their hard work."
The centers are expected to create more than 1,000 new full-time jobs to the state and are expected to launch in 2021.
“With an unrivaled workforce and a strong economy, Kansas has proven itself to be a first-rate destination for Amazon as they continue to expand operations and bring more than 1,000 new jobs to our great state,” Kelly said. “From Day One, my administration has prioritized rebuilding Kansas’ foundation, and significant economic announcements like these prove that our state is on the right track. I want to thank our city partners, staff members and Amazon for making this possible.”
Both buildings will each have over 500 new employees.
In addition to the new centers, Amazon also plans to open a new delivery center in Wichita before the end of 2020.
