Is there a hole in the market? Large volumes of net-zero liquid fuels would be needed to decarbonize aircraft, large marine vessels, locomotives, and long-distance heavy trucks in the U.S. Otherwise biofuels would need to expand to such an extent that their production threatens food production and existing natural carbon sinks. Critical Issues in Transportation for 2024 and Beyond points out that net-zero carbon liquid fuels are technically feasible but do not yet exist at commercial scale.
