San Francisco International Airport has unveiled a first look at the $2.4billion - approximately £1.9billion - transformation of its Terminal One, which acts as a tribute to civil rights leader Harvey Milk .

The airport offered a sneak peek inside the renovated terminal which is not only named the Harvey Milk Terminal, but will also offer a huge exhibition celebrating the life and achievements of the first openly gay elected public official in California.

Harvey Milk: Messenger of Hope, will span nearly 120 metres and will include 100 images of Milk, as well as art, mementos and more, offering an in-depth look into his impact on LGBTQ+ rights.

The exhibition will officially open in February 2020 and will be a permanent offering for passengers.

The first phase of the terminal's opening includes nine new gates for airlines JetBlue and Southwest Airlines, while further stages will also include new exterior signs, a dedication plaque and a publicly-accessible inglenook honouring the life and legacy of Harvey Milk.

Ivar C. Satero, Airport Director, said: "Through the exhibitions that honour his life and legacy, visitors will learn about Harvey's work to further equality and acceptance for all marginalised communities. Harvey Milk embodies the spirit of San Francisco and our airport. All are welcome here."

The renovations are expected to be fully complete by 2022.

The terminal will include floor-to-ceiling windows that darken and lighten according to sunlight, heaps of lounge rooms and 2,134 places to sit down, the first ever airport multi-use all gender toilette, an animal relief room and extras such as an energy efficient baggage carrier system and self-energising lifts.

San Francisco International Airport welcomed 58 million passengers in 2018.
