What is the Kansas Academy for Victim Assistance?
The Kansas Governor’s Grants Program (KGGP) provides leadership and oversight for statewide victim services training. In 2002, the first training was held and called Building Advocacy Skills, Information and Knowledge (B.A.S.I.K.).  In 2012, the KGGP updated the training course and began the Kansas Academy for Victim Assistance (KAVA), an enhanced and reformatted version of B.A.S.I.K.  KAVA is a statewide training academy committed to the improvement of victim services by enhancing the skills of professionals who work with crime victims and survivors. The purpose of the academy is to provide participants with a foundation of knowledge and skills to create a consistent, victim-centered, and trauma-informed response to crime victims and survivors in Kansas.

Who should attend?
KAVA is open to staff and volunteers from community agencies, coalitions, or organizations who provide direct service to crime victims.  This can include, but is not limited to, victim advocates, prosecuting attorneys, corrections professionals, law enforcement, individual counselors and therapists, and allied professionals. KAVA is designed for those with less than three years of experience providing direct services in the victim services field.

What are the requirements?
• All interested participants are required to submit an application. Due to limited space, a selection process will occur.
• Accepted applicants are expected to the KAVA session for which they are selected.
• KAVA is approximately 42 hours of pre-work and live online classes. Participants must attend and complete all aspects of KAVA work to graduate.
