Neighbors deal with more noise as flight paths shift for runway construction

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nighttime is about to get a lot noisier for neighbors near Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Starting Monday night, the airport will shift flight patterns over houses because of runway construction, which will last for months.

Families who live near the airport are used to all the takeoffs and landings during the day, but now they’re going to have a lot more planes flying directly over their homes while they’re trying to sleep.

Crews will close a diagonal runway for seven months while they rebuild a taxiway. The project will send flight traffic onto the north-south runways overnight, which means there will be a lot more noise in the neighborhoods north and south of the airport.

The flight pattern changes will last from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Some neighbors told Channel 9 their families have already tried soundproofing their homes with double doors and windows to block out the noise.

Charlotte Douglas is ranked as one of the 10 busiest airports in the world, with more than 1,400 flights every day, so many neighbors realize no matter what they do it's going to be hard to ignore the changes.

Crews said construction should be finished by Thanksgiving.
